Research Areas

Active research is ongoing on all aspects of digital image and video processing as well as medical image processing. Among the digital image and video processing projects are 2-D and 3-D motion estimation, video segmentation, video object modeling and tracking, video manipulation and special effects editing, high resolution video restoration and standards conversion, image and video indexing for content-based search and filtering, and augmented reality. University of Rochester is an active participant of MPEG-4 and MPEG-7 international standardization efforts. In medical imaging, a number of advanced techniques for 3D and 4D imaging have been developed in collaboration with researchers in the department of Radiology. Some of the ongoing projects include: exquisite 4D reconstructions of the musculoskeletal system; 3D sonoelastography; and the fusion of 3D MRI and Ultrasound data sets to combine the best features of each modality. Other topics include VLSI implementation of advanced Doppler imaging techniques, the development of advanced non-linear harmonic imaging techniques, halftone image processing, color calibration, and image restoration.
