Score Following for Piano Music with Sustained Effects

Abstract

One challenge in score following for piano music is the sustained effect, i.e., the waveform of a note lasts longer than what is notated in the score. This can be caused by expressive performing styles such as the legato articulation and the usage of the sustain and the sostenuto pedals, and can also be caused by the reverberation in the recording environment. This effect creates non-notated overlappings between sustained notes and latter notes in the audio. It decreases the audio-score alignment accuracy and robustness of score following systems, and makes them be prone to delay errors, i.e., aligning audio to a score position that is earlier than the correct position. In this project, we propose to modify the feature representation of the audio to attenuate the sustained effect. We show that this idea can be applied to both the chromagram and the spectral-peak representations, which are commonly used in score following systems. Experiments on the MAPS dataset show that the proposed method significantly improves the alignment accuracy and robustness of state-of-the-art score following systems for piano performances, in both anechoic and highly reverberant environments.

Experimental Results

Dataset

To systematically evaluate the proposed approach on piano music with a large variety of styles, playing techniques, and the degree of the sustained effect, we used about 30 seconds of each of the entire 60 acoustically recorded pieces from the two folders (close and ambient) of the MAPS dataset. According to the degree of the sustained effect, I categorized the 60 pieces into 3 groups. We further created another group by adding reverberation to all the 60 pieces by convolving each piece with a room impulse response (RT60 = 2.34s) sampled from the St. Albans Cathedral . Therefore, we have four levels of the sustained effect in our dataset:

Evaluation Measures

We use three kinds of evaluation measures for score following:

Since our proposed sustained-sound reduction operation is built upon an online onset detection module, we also evaluate onset detection performance using Precision, Recall, F-measure.

I also generate 2-channel audios for the result of some pieces. The left channel is the original audio; the right channel is synthesized sinusoid/shepard tone based on the corresponding aligned onset time of each note in the score. For each audio file, the more synchronized between the two channels, the better score following performance it presents.

Results Table

I'd like to share detailed results with other researchers. In the 2 tables, I list the result of each one from the 60 pieces, which may be a good reference for further research and not usually practical to include in a scientific paper. All the 60 pieces are categorized into 3 groups (No Effect, Legato, Pedal) based on different levels of sustained effect. Table.1 is the results on anechoic pieces, and Table.2 is on reverberant pieces. It displays the methods from both chroma (Chr) and spectral peak (Pk) representations of the audio, and on each method it compares the results of baseline and proposed sustain-sound reduction approach. Due to stochastic factors in our system, each value of score following result is the median of 10-times run. Onset detection results are also displayed, where we use the same onset detection threshold for all pieces although it is not optimal for each one.

For most pieces, we can hear a delay in the right channel beeps (estimated note onset time) from baseline method due to sustained effect.
